Fabric and Notions for the Casey Pattern

The Casey sewalong starts soon. Before it starts we wanted to dive into fabric and notion suggestions so you can gather supplies.

FABRIC

Main Fabric

The Casey calls for light to medium weight woven fabrics.  For a more traditional boxer I like something in the 2-3oz range. Sometimes these fabrics might be a be a bit on the see through side. This doesn't bother me if I am wearing them as pajamas or just around the house. If I am wearing them out, I usually go for something closer to 3-6 oz. Anything heavier than that and them might get bulky at the elastic waistband.

For the model samples, we used a striped cotton shirting from the Fabric Store. They were a 2 oz and pretty crisp. I loved the classic boxer style look that the thin striped fabric made.

Some suggestions include lightweight cottons like cotton lawn, cotton voile or cotton shirtings. I also love a linen or linen blend. Linens make a really nice everyday short or pant that lend to the casual look of this pattern. I've also made a few pairs in rayon which give a more elevated look. And if your really want to make them nice, use silk crepe for the most luxurious pjs ever.

NOTIONS

You are also going to need a few notions to finish your Casey shorts or pants.

Coordinating Thread

Be sure to grab some coordinating thread for your Casey. I generally go for an allpurpose polyester thread.

Buttons

The Casey calls for 3/8" buttons although I think anything between about 1/4" and 3/8" can work. I usual just go for a small white button for a classic look, but it's also a great excuse to pull our your fun buttons to add a bit of character.

Elastic

The waistband is finished with 1" wide elastic. Any 1 inch elastic should work, just know that different elastics have different amounts of stretch and some are stronger than others. The instructions give a suggested elastic waistband length for each view and size, but it's always good to measure the elastic on your waist yourself and adjust as necessary.

That is it! This is a simple, beginner friendly pattern where the fabric and notions should all be easy to source.
