Welcome back for the second day of the Brynn sewalong. Today we are tackling the Neckband. The instructions for today apply to all views and lengths, but we will be only showing View A (sleeveless)/ hip length.
ALL VIEWS / LENGTHS
Step 12 - Turn the bottom of the garment up by 5/8”, wrong sides touching. Pin and press.
NOTE: If your fabric is very stretchy, you may want to consider using fusible knit tape to stabilize the hem before stitching.
Using a stretch stitch, topstitch at 1/2” from the folded hem to secure.
Step 13 - With right sides touching, pin the Neckband pieces together at the center back neck seam, matching notches.
Serge or sew using a stretch stitch.
Press the seam allowances open or toward one side.
Step 14 - Fuse interfacing to the ends of the Neckband piece, as pictured.
Step 15 - With wrong sides touching, fold the Neckband in half lengthwise. Press.
Step 16 - Open the Neckband back up. With right sides touching, pin and sew the bottom edges of the Neckband together at 3⁄8”.
Trim as needed and turn right side out. Press.
Step 17 - With right sides touching, pin the Neckband to the garment neckline, matching notches.
Stretch between notches on the upper Neckband, and pin generously.
Be extra careful to line up the bottom edges. I sometime put a dab of a glue stick at that bottom edge to make sure it stays lined up.
Step 18 - Serge or sew using a stretch stitch at 3⁄8”.
NOTE: Stretch and recovery vary greatly with knit fabrics. To get the optimal fit, we recommend basting this seam first and adjusting the Neckband as needed.
Press seam allowances away from the Neckband.
OPTIONAL: Stitch 1/16” inside of the garment, catching the seam allowances underneath.
That is it for today. Come back tomorrow and we will finish our Brynn Cardigans.
