Quinn Sewalong Day 2

Welcome back for day 2 of the Quinn Sewalong. Yesterday, we sewed up the front of the Quinn, and today we will assembling the back.

Step 8 - With right sides touching, line up the center back edges of the Middle Back pieces. Pin.

Stitch at a normal 1⁄2” seam allowance.

Trim seam allowances down to about 1⁄4”. Finish seam allowances using your preferred method, and press to one side. I like to serge and trim at the same time.

Step 9 - Grab your back Ties. Fold each Tie in half lengthwise, right sides touching. Pin.

Stitch the long edge at a normal 1⁄2” seam allowance.

Trim the seam allowances in half and turn right side out.

Press flat.

Step 10 - Tuck one end of each tie inside the tube by 1⁄2”. Press.

Edgestitch around the three finished sides at 1/8” as shown below.

Step 11 - With the wrong side of the Tie touching the right side of the garment, center the Ties over the circles on the assembled Middle Back so the raw edges are lined up. Pin. Note that the shorter tie goes on the left and the longer tie on the right.

Step 12 - With right sides touching, pin each Side Back to the assembled Middle Back, matching notches (ties will be sandwiched in the middle).

Stitch at a normal 1⁄2” seam allowance. Just like the front, it can feel like the seams won't match up, but go slow and pin a lot and it will work out.

Clip and notch curved areas as needed.

Trim the seam allowances down to about 1⁄4”. Finish seam allowances using your preferred method. (I serged here.) Press towards the sides of the garment.

Step 13 - Edgestitch 1⁄8” from the seam into each Side Back, catching the seam allowances of the main garment and Ties underneath.

Step 14 - Prep all bias bindings by folding in one long edge by 1⁄4” and pressing. This includes the Back Neck Binding and the two Armhole Bindings.

Step 15 - You can set your armhole bindings aside for now. With right sides touching, pin the unfolded edge of the Back Neck Binding to the Back neckline. Note that the Binding is intentionally longer than the neckline edge and will be trimmed later. (You also don't have to pin this first. I usually just sew it without pinning as it sometimes feels easier that way with bias binding.)

Stitch at a normal 1⁄2” seam allowance. Trim seam allowance in half.

Press the Binding up and over the seam allowance.

Understitch by sewing a line of stitching just inside of the bias binding, catching the seam allowances underneath.

Press the Binding to the inside of the garment. Pin.

Stitch along the folded edge. Trim the excess Binding off past the shoulder seams.

Press and steam the back neckline.

And that is it for today. Now that the back is assembled, come back tomorrow and we will sew the front to the back.
