VINTAGE MAY : TODDLER SKIRT AND CROP TOP

May 22, 2014
I was super excited to participate in Vintage May with the talented ladies – Kristen at Skirt As Top and Jess at Craftiness is not Optional.  When preparing for this post I dove head first into the land of vintage patterns.  I had never really sewn from vintage patterns before and was floored by all of the amazing, and cheap patterns out there.  There were a lot from the 50’s / 60’s that I was really drawn to, but when I found Simplicity 6866 I had immediate nostalgia.
The date on the pattern says 1985, which means I was just a toddler when it came out.  This is so reminiscent of what I wore as a child.  The crop top, seersucker, and denim all take me right back.
I also love that this outfit is currently on trend.  Crop tops and full skirts – I just wish that I could pull this look off on myself.  The fabric on the top is a rainbow colored seersucker and the skirt is made up in some denim chambray.  Both are from fabric.com.
My favorite part of the outfit has got to be the back.  I love the cutout with the large button.  I think it adds a real modern flare to the look.  I want to make another version of this by attaching a skirt to the top and leaving the triangle opening in the back.  Just need the time.
The only change that I made is that I lengthened the top by about 1/2″  I might even add a little more length if I made it again.

I remember making this very top for my girls. Thanks for the memories. You should consider putting out a pattern similar to this. I would buy it. Cute little girl too.

Adorable! I have some leftover chambray fabric, maybe i’ll sew up a skirt like that for Violet. I love the pockets.

you are welcome to my pattern. although honestly its a rectangle with some pockets so you probably don’t need it.

So cute, and I bet that top uses barely any fabric, making it a good project to eat up some scraps!

so true – great stash buster. the top and skirt both.

This looks just like the first outfit I ever sewed myself (probably in 1989), in a similar hot pink pinstripe. Your’s is very cute, and nicely updated. Maybe I should dig out that pattern…

Love this outfit! How was the denim chambray to work with? I have a dress in mind for fabric similar to this, and I was just wondering how you liked working with it or what kind of drape it had.

    • Reply Kelli Ward May 23, 2014 at 12:43 PM

It was nice. A little stiff, but I like that for a full skirt. It washes up really well too. I think it would work really great for something like a shirtdress or a more structured dress, but would be worried about anything too flowy because it doesn’t have a lot of drape.

Oh this is just too cute!! I love the back of the shirt so sweet!

  • Reply Suz May 23, 2014 at 12:38 AM

How sweet! I love the striped top!! And the brown saltwater sandals look just like the sandals I used to wear!!

I found mine on ebay. If you google the pattern number you should be able to find some for sale.

  • Reply Dee Durrant May 23, 2014 at 3:02 PM

I had a similar dress with this back detail in the 80’s…I created my own pattern for my little girl as I couldn’t find any online at the time of searching. I’m just learning how to grade it up in size as she’s growing out of her first one

I recently bought this after finding your blog here. I fell in love with the style as I love vintage too and saw my daughter wearing these all summer! So, I wanted to make her a few! But, I am honestly having trouble since they are only showing one of the views and the directions are not so detailed. Do you have a tutorial for hpw you did this? My problem comes from when I sew the inner small lining to the main piece. I sewed everything down but it gave me a large margin from the outside which is not supposed to show on the back anyways, Is there a tutorial?
